Ants are social insects that live in colonies or nests that can be located anywhere in and around your home. These insects can live under concrete slabs and next to your home foundation as well as in crawlspaces and anywhere in your yard. When worker ants forage for food they often enter homes and become a nuisance by their presence and contaminate foods.
Once any food is located these scavengers lay down a scent as they return to the nest, and other ants pick up this scent and follow the trail back to your food. There are several types of ants that may be located around homes ranging in size and color. Ants can appear yellowish, light brown, reddish brown, or even jet black in color and the largest variety is the carpenter ant.
These carpenter ants measure between a quarter and three quarters of an inch and appear black and brownish in color. They nest in moist wood and damage your home by excavating galleries in the wood that are clean and do not contain sawdust or other debris. These ants don’t feed on wood and find most dead insects and human sweeties and meats most desirable.
